Shows Up In Force At The 2011 Livestrong Austin Marathon and Half Marathon

Congratulations and thank you to all TST members and trainees who ran and/or volunteered (some did both) at the Austin Marathon & Half Marathon on February 20, 2011.

Special congratulations to all of the first-timers who completed the marathon, bring TST's 100% success rate to 63-for-63:  since the first-time women's group began in 2005, 63 women have started the marathon, and 63 have crossed the finish line.

All totaled, 80 club members and trainees - well over a third of our club - participated in the race in some capacity.  Listed in the column at right are all TST members and trainees who ran the full or half, or volunteered on race day or at the Expo.

In addition, Ashley Castoreno, who was "adopted" by TST as part of "Team Ashley," completed the marathon as part of her year-long journey towards fitness to join the United States Air Force.  On 2-20-10, Ashley was right out of high school, and too heavy to meet the Air Force's weight limits.  Local runner, sports reporter and film producer Jen Ohlson, author of "Every Town Needs a Trail,"
reached out to TST for help with Ashley's marathon-training.  One year later, on 2-20-11, Ashley had lost 105 pounds, and is only 10 pounds away from her goal weight.

Ashley's story will be one of the major storylines in an upcoming documentary film, "
Health Needs a Hero," which will premiere in May 2011.  The documentary will benefit The PE3 Foundation, a nonprofit organization based in Austin that is devoted to creating life-changing, life-lasting healthy behaviors in at-risk children, and their families, who show signs of nutritional and physical deficiencies.

Congratulations once again to all the finishers, and THANK YOU to everyone who volunteered to make the race a success!
Twenty-Six • Two Marathon Club began 6 1/2 years ago as a club with 5 founding members, and has now grown into a club with over 200 members who, as demonstrated on February 20, 2011, are active leaders and participants in the Austin running scene.

Results from the Livestrong Austin Marathon and Half Marathon are here.
